No arruines el Camino de Santiago con ampollas: elige bien tus calcetines

Don't ruin your Camino de Santiago with blisters: choose your socks wisely

The pilgrim's number one enemy is not rain or backpack weight

It's their feet. More specifically, the blisters and chafing that appear in the first few kilometers and can turn the Camino de Santiago into an experience of pure suffering.

The good news: they can be almost completely avoided. And the key lies in something many people overlook when preparing for the Camino: socks.

Why cotton is your worst ally on the Camino

Most novice pilgrims make the same mistake: they wear cotton socks. They are comfortable, familiar, cheap. But on the Camino, cotton becomes your enemy:

  • It absorbs sweat and retains it, keeping your feet wet for hours.
  • Moisture increases friction between your foot and footwear.
  • More friction = blisters. It's that simple.

With 20 or 30 kilometers daily, this process accelerates. What would take days to appear on a normal hike can appear on the first stage of the Camino.

What a sock needs to withstand the Camino

Not all technical socks are created equal. For the Camino de Santiago, specifically look for these points:

  • Technical materials: polyester, nylon, or blends with elastane that wick away sweat instead of retaining it.
  • Seamless toe: traditional seams create friction points on the toes with accumulated kilometers.
  • Reinforced heel and toe: the most stressed areas during long walks need more protection.
  • Firm fit: a sock that moves inside your footwear generates friction. It needs to stay in place.
  • Real breathability: your foot needs to be able to breathe, especially on summer stages.

The trick few people know: change your socks halfway through the day

Carrying 2 or 3 pairs of technical socks and changing them halfway through the stage is one of the most effective tips given by experienced pilgrims. A fresh sock reduces accumulated friction and gives your foot a break when it needs it most.

It takes up little space, weighs almost nothing, and can save you the second half of the Camino.
